Mossbay Careers Fair

Your Derwent and Solway

On the 18th March a Careers Fair was held in a bid to tackle high levels of unemployment in priority areas in West Cumbria. The event was hosted by Your Derwent and Solway and Allerdale Borough Council, as part of the Allerdale Join Initiative project.

PPM attended as we are Your Derwent and Solway’s main contractor for Responsive and Void Repairs in West Cumbria as well as Yorkshire and Sheffield.

At the event we promoted our work experience positions available within PPM to residents. There were also a number of other local and national employers such as Debenhams and ISS landscaping; another contractor – Top Notch Contractors Ltd; and the University of Cumbria, amongst others.

Inspira Cumbria, Job Centre Plus and the Your Derwent and Solway Employment and Skills Officer were also on hand to give advice to residents about finding work and making job applications.

Your Derwent and Solway have reported the following findings from the event:

  • 3 Young people signed up to a 10-week Traineeship programme with Nordic Focus Training Group, starting on the 18th April in Workington. The traineeship covers topics such as customer service, confidence building, communication and interview skills;
  • 1 residents was offered an interview with ISS Landscaping;
  • 2 residents signed up for different volunteering roles with Age UK West Cumbria;
  • 1 resident signed up an administration volunteer with Allerdale Disability Association;
  • 2 young people signed up for training and volunteer placement with The Conversation Volunteers;
  • 3 residents submitted applications to Croftlands Trust;
  • 2 resident’s requests information on the Wheels to Work scheme provided by Inspira.

It was also an excellent networking opportunity for all the exhibitors involved.
